Greasy Scalp
Tips for Dealing With a Greasy Scalp
If you have greasy hair, there is a possibility that the real problem is that you have a greasy scalp. In a lot of cases greasy hair will originate from the oils that are being produced by the body; these natural oils that come from the body are meant to help keep your hair healthy. The problem is that if your body is making too much of this oil, it will cause you to have a greasy scalp and oily hair.
The amount of oily substance that the body produces is related to how much hair you have. People who have fine hair will actually have more hair, which means that you may tend to have a greasy scalp. Another problem that can lead to oily hair is hormonal changes, such as what you would experience during menopause and puberty.
If you tend to have a greasy scalp frequently, you may have additional problems as a result, aside from oily hair. People who have a chronic problem with the overproduction of the oily substance known as sebum, which is produced by the sebaceous glands, will also have other hair problems. Some of these problems include eventual hair loss, and rashes on the scalp. Constant oily hair may also cause dandruff problems.
Aside from hormonal problems, someone might also be genetically inclined to have over productive oil glands and a greasy scalp; in this case the only thing you can do is to control the problem. Someone that does not take good care of their hair by shampooing and conditioning on a regular basis, will also be inclined to have oily hair; this is easily rectified by simply shampooing on a daily basis.
If you have a greasy scalp that is causing your hair to be too oily, there are some steps you can take to help control the problem.
- Try washing your hair on a daily basis with a moisture rich shampoo and conditioner; if this doesn’t help you can also try using a clarifying shampoo.
- When applying conditioner, try only putting it in the hair from about the middle of the strands to the ends. Keep the conditioner away from the scalp.
-
Avoid scrubbing and rubbing the scalp too much when you are shampooing; this will stimulate oil production.
- Use hot water when you are washing your hair to help breakup the oils and rinse them away.
- When you are done rinsing your hair in hot water, follow with a cool water rinse. This will help control oil production.
- Try not to touch your hair too much, or brush it more than necessary, as this tends to attract more oils to the hair and scalp.
- You will also not want to wear hats or headbands; these will attract more oil and cause you to have a greasy scalp and hair.
- If you use skin products and cosmetics, try and stay away from any that is oil based so that it doesn’t magnify your problem even more.
- In the case that your greasy scalp is due to hormonal changes, you may want to contact your doctor about how to control your hormones to help reduce the oil production.
For those that have taken every step possible to control their oily hair problem, but can’t seem to find anything that works, there is always the option of visiting your dermatologist or family doctor to get advice. There are special hair products that your doctor can prescribe to help with this problem, plus your physician may be able to recommend some natural remedies as well.
