Scalp Bumps

What Are Scalp Bumps All About?

Having scalp bumps can be irritating and leave you wondering how in the world you got them in the first place!  What are they? and where do they come from?

Scalp bumps can be a few different things.  The most common reason that you may get scalp bumps is a condition known as dermatitis.  Dermatitis is when your scalp becomes itchy or inflamed.  When scratching, some fluid may leak from the scalp causing your skin to crust over in that area and produce a nice little bump for you.  Dermatitis can be treated by using hair products that are designed specifically for treating dermatitis.

Scalp bumps can also be caused by an oily scalp.  An excess of oil can clog your pores in your scalp and cause you to get these bumps.  The oil clogging the pore causes it to become inflamed, and therefore causes a pimple or a bump on the scalp.  Scalp bumps are normal for newborns, and many doctors attribute this to the exposure to their mother’s hormones while in the womb.  There are plenty of products available today to help adult manage this problem and either tame them down, or help heal them altogether.

Scalp bumps may also be caused by the shaft of a hair follicle getting clogged.  In this case, it’s the shaft of the follicle which is much larger.  These in turn can create a sebaceous cyst on the scalp.  The sebaceous cyst is often solid, but appears to be filled with a white fluid.  Usually, the treatment for something like this is surgical, but it’s best to ask a dermatologist directly so that you can find out what is available to you.

Skin cancer can also cause you to have scalp bumps.  Skin cancer can appear in different forms, and on the head it may usually appear as either a large mole, or just a rather large bump on the head.  If you have reason to believe that this may be skin cancer, then you need to talk to your doctor right away.

Hives is another cause of scalp bumps.  These bumps are usually a little smaller, but they are red in appearance, and can be alone, or they can be a cluster forming one rather large bump on the scalp.  These can be very itchy, and some attribute these hives to nervousness.  Some people get nervous and break out in hives, or they get hives as an allergic reaction to medications or lotions, but instead of these hives appearing on your body, they appear on your head.

Lastly, scalp bumps may also be caused by scalp acne.  Women tend to get this simply because their glands attempt to produce more oil, and that just makes matters worse.  Consider the level of oil that your glands are producing, then throw in some styling products and you are bound to have scalp bumps.  There is not really a way to avoid this, and many women get these and are annoyed by them.

Finding a solution isn’t always easy, but you can look into some options.  There are many different types of shampoo that have deep moisturizers in them that can help when your scalp is dry.  When the scalp is too oily, there are shampoos that you can use for that to calm the oil down.  Some hairdressers encourage their clients to use a hot oil treatment every once in awhile to balance out the scalp’s level of natural moisture.  Every person is different, and there are no two scalps alike, so you have to consider which products will be best for you and your situation.
