Scalp Moisturizer
Making Your Own Scalp Moisturizer
Are you tired of wasting money on different brands of scalp moisturizer that just don’t seem to be working for you? The annoyance and embarrassment that a dry, itchy scalp causes can easily lead to frustration and unneeded stress, especially if it seems as if none of the store-bought moisturizers can help. Well don’t give up hope yet! There are plenty of at-home concoctions you can whip to and try with very little money spent in the process. If one DIY treatment isn’t right for you, then you can simply move on to another without having to pay an arm and a leg!
Dry Scalp with Oily Hair
Sometimes one of the toughest issues with a dry scalp can be the obstacle of oily hair. Treating the dryness of the scalp can often result in intensifying the greasiness of the hair. This is a very frustrating, but one which isn’t necessarily hopeless. The combination of aloe vera gel, lemon juice, and almond oil can provide just the right balance of moisture and cleansing properties that can soothe the scalp and absorb excess grease in the hair.
The base of this mixture is the aloe vera gel. About half a cup will do if you just want to condition the scalp and roots of the hair; but if you intend to treat all of your hair then you’ll have to add more aloe vera gel. Aloe vera is known for its cooling and soothing properties which can calm even the itchiest of scalps. It also helps the skin to repair itself. Half a teaspoon of lemon juice will absorb the excess oils from the roots of the hair. Add half a tablespoon of almond oil to the mixture to soothe inflammation and irritation on the scalp. Almond oil also acts as an emollient which coats the scalp, protecting it from moisture loss and harsh external elements.
Massage this mixture into the scalp and the roots of the hair. Allow it to sit for about ten minutes before rinsing and washing your hair as usual.
Dry Scalp with Dandruff
Dandruff is a recurring problem that can never be completely cured, only treated. Expensive shampoos and even prescription treatments can be largely ineffective in preventing the accumulation of flakes that are characteristic of dandruff. Itchiness and dryness of the scalp drive the impulse to scratch the scalp which can result in open sores and further buildup of flakes.
A mixture of coconut oil and a few drops of tea tree oil makes an excellent scalp moisturizer as well as a soothing agent for dandruff. Use as much coconut oil as it takes to saturate your scalp. Coconut oil is also an excellent moisturizer for the hair and can be applied as a hot oil treatment, so if you would like to treat your hair as well simply use enough coconut oil to saturate your hair. Add about four or five drops of tea tree oil to the mixture. Tea tree oil has antiseptic and cleansing properties that will help to neutralize the overgrowth of fungus that causes dandruff. Leave the mixture on the scalp/hair for at least 10 minutes before rinsing with a gentle shampoo.
Typical Dry, Itchy Scalp
To treat the typical occurrence of a dry, itchy scalp, a single avocado makes for a terrific scalp moisturizer. Simply peel the skin from the avocado and remove the pit. Mash the “meat” of the avocado into a thick paste. If you want a smoother paste, try adding a tablespoon of natural yogurt to the mixture. Avocado is extremely hydrating on its own, but the added tablespoon of yogurt can help to revitalize and strengthen the scalp.
